We took our Christmas tree off the porch and put it in the backyard. It is now a haven for the birds. We put lots of little treats in it for them. Our pinecone ornaments we covered in peanut butter and birdseed. Autumn had fun doing this with Dad.
I poured the bird seed into a baking pan and it worked well to hold the seed and carry the finished cones outside. It has been super cold up here, minus temps. we bundled up the kids and all went outside to decorate the tree for the birds. We did it super fast because we were super cold! I think we were outside for less than 5 minutes :)
We also strung up some popcorn and cut apples and oranges into rings to put on the branches. It has been a week now and the birds are loving it. We have seen winter sparrows and red cardinals. There is also bunny tracks in the snow around the tree.
It was fun doing this with the kids and teaching them about all the little critters that need food in the winter. I think we will be doing this again. I liked my porch Christmas tree so much I'll be looking for a crate like this one I saw on Pintrist.
Look you can recycle wreaths too!
