This weekend we went on a family outing to Kensington Metro Park. The weather here has been cold and snowy. This weekend though it warmed up a little and we decided it was the perfect time to do some trail hiking. Hiking in the winter you say? . . . yes in the winter. At Kensington Metro Park they have a really cool Nature Center. It is set in the woods and you usually see lots of wild life there. Year round it is a cool place to visit, but we love going there in the winter after a good snowfall. The woods are beautiful and the animals are moving. We saw deer, wild turkeys, and lots of winter woodland birds.
If you are quiet and still on the trails the little birds will find you.
The Nature Center sells bird feed and if you are still and patient the little birds will land right on your hand to get a nibble.
We saw Tufted tit mouse, chickadees, a Downy woodpecker and Cardinals. Our kids really loved it. They are pretty young still so we pulled them along the trail on sleds.
When they are older we are hoping to take them again. Separate from the Nature Center are Ski Rentals and trails and there is a sledding area, ice fishing and ice skating. A must visit for all Nature Lovers!
